Last November 19, 2016, Maryknoll Sister Helen R. Graham, M.M. taught a seminar entitled ““The Lord, the Lord, a God Compassionate and Gracious …” – Mercy in the Old Testament.” The spirituality seminar sponsored by MMCAA was held at the ESI Conference Room, a lovely and spacious venue with picture windows framing the College’s lush gardens.
MMCAA’s past Chairperson, Grace T. Favila introduced the speaker. As it turned out, Sr. Helen leads a weekly Bible study with Grace and other friends, and does the same every Tuesday for Economics professor and newspaper columnist Winnie Monsod, among others. Miriam alumni present included Margie Holmes, Edy Lim, Elaine Urbano, Sylvia Marasigan, Liza Castaneda, Karen Ladaw, Doris del Rosario and Cynthia Huet.
Sr. Helen led a reflection on God’s being, starting from the Book of Exodus (Ex 34: 6-7) and flowing into intriguing discussions on the Thirteen Attributes of God’s Mercy, the Hidden, Mysterious name of God (YHWH), and on How Prayer Really Matters to the Air, Where does Prayer Aim, Who does it Stir?
But lest one thinks this was a scholarly and formal discussion, the reality is far from it! Yes it was a day of reflection, but there was also plenty of camaraderie, fun and laughter – particularly during the Q and A portion which touched on all sorts of topics!
This is the second of a seminar series that started in 2015 with the successful “Spirituality of Midlife and Aging”, given by Sr. Anna Malandan. Watch out for 2017’s planned seminar to be given by Miriam alumna, eminent psychologist, author and educator Dra. Margarita Holmes.
